Questions & Answers

  1. What is the best way to fasten TekFoil™?
It depends on what you are attaching it to. For example, on our ClearSpan structures we have a steel frame and a lot of people will use self-tapping screws and neo-bonded washers to the underside of the frame to effectively do that. If you are attaching to wood, a lot of people use staples or decking screws with washers. If you are using TekFoil™ in between wall spaces or underneath roofs, you can just lay it out and fasten the corners down with staples or screws. Feel free to ask your National Account Manager for suggestions.
  2. If you install two layers of reflective insulation, does that double the R value?
Two layers of bubble would double your R-value. Remember that TekFoil™ is a vapor barrier, so if you put two pieces on top of each other there will be a slight air space and moisture can collect in that area. It would be more beneficial to create an air space for insulation. You can also use TekFoil™ in conjunction with batten insulation or foam board which works well.
  3. What is the R value of TekFoil™?
The R-value of TekFoil™ varies. R-value is the measurement of any material and how much heat can be transferred through it. We tend to see an R-value between 7 and 8 for TekFoil™, but it depends on your application.
  4. Can TekFoil™ be used outside or buried in the ground?
Technically, TekFoil™ should not to be used in outdoor environments exposed to the elements. I have had customers who have used it in greenhouses and under the ground, but just know that it will degrade and it is not intended to be there. A lot of our customers find that if they do that, at some point they need to replace the material. It can be used outside, just know it is not intended for long-term use.
  5. What is the difference between double bubble and single bubble? Does one work better than the other for insulating?
The double bubble will give you better performance, and there is a slight increase in price for the double bubble insulation. The double bubble will also offer you double the R-value in all of your applications because it is providing an additional air space between the two reflective surfaces, or the reflective surface in the white poly if it is a radiant heat application. Some scenarios like workshops, don't necessarily want to heat to 65 to 70 degrees, they just want to take the chill off and be able to go inside and be comfortable.
  6. Can TekFoil™ be used as a house wrap?
I would stick to the applications that I noted earlier. You want to be cautious in using this as a house wrap. It's not like a Tyrek material. It is more commonly used on interior walls.
  7. What is the difference between a radiant barrier and reflective insulation walls?
TekFoil™ is reflective insulation. Radiant barriers strictly reflect some of the heat transferred, whereas reflective insulation is bubble insulation, which provides the airspace. The air spaces that the bubbles create give you the increased R-value.

Reflective Bubble Insulation
• Installation in exterior applications could accelerate aging of the non-foil-faced product.
• Exposure to exterior environments is not recommended.
• Pressure washing or washing with chlorine-based chemicals in not recommended.

TekFoil™ Clear Bubble Insulation
